my medical future. in 5 parts. in 10 years

Calenders and lists are simultaneously liberating and terrifying. We have no guarantees with our time on this earth and God's loving laughter accompanies a life planned so rigidly.

(cue laughter)

May 2011 - May 2012
   - take calculus in prep for physics (june-august)
   - get Wilderness First Responder certification (june)
   - apply to 4 different pre-medical post-baccalaureate programs (sept-oct)
   - travel to Haiti to learn, help and research the realities of post-disaster long-term medical care (sept)
   - continue doing volunteer research work at Johns Hopkins
   - continue working construction to pay the bills (always)

June 2012 - May 2013
   - begin a pre-med program somewhere
   - volunteer research work at JHU
   - take MCATS
   - apply to med schools
   - continue working construction to pay the bills

June 2013 - August 2014
   - do a 'glide' year (this means gaining clinical or research experience in preparation for med school)
   - continue working construction to pay the bills

Sept 2014 - May 2018
   - survive med school

May 2018 -  ? 2021
  - begin making babies??
  - residency somewhere

I will be 35 yrs old at this point in my life.

  1. OK, please...let's be honest, "making babies" will be happening around 2013, not 2018 (or beyond!)...we need our little munchkins to grow up playing together... :)

  2. haha.. is that a confession as to the timing of your little guys? you know, that timing could put you two as the child bearing forerunners of the group.

2018 is very possible for us. if this goes along as planned, i want to actually be around for my kid, not in library 24/7 wishing i was home.

but, hey, let's be honest. things just happen sometimes. :)

  3. without knowing you, and basing this largely on your one sentence 'i can make that' (i think that way too) i am going to go out on a limb and say - you can do it! and i also don't think you will just survive medical school, i think you will enjoy it. Oh, and don't even worry about the babies, they will come when the come and you'll find a way to make it work...good luck to you!

  4. thanks for the encouragement. whit and i are doing our best to focus on one day at time. our brains start spinning when we see calenders like this. but, i think if we enjoy the present for what it is... like you say, we'll make it.

    ps. we love your blog.
